The Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES), together with the University of Adelaide’s Wine Economics Research Centre and the American Association of Wine Economists (AAWE), is calling for papers for a pre-AARES conference workshop on

Wine Globalization: Past and Prospective

Adelaide Convention Centre
Adelaide CBD, South Australia
6 February 2018

Convenors: Kym Anderson (University of Adelaide and ANU), Julian Alston (University of California, Davis), Vicente Pinilla (University of Zaragoza, Spain) and Karl Storchmann (New York University)

Scope: Up to 16 papers will be selected on the basis of their empirical analysis of causes or consequences of trends or cycles in wine production, consumption and trade as markets have become more globalized over the past two centuries. Comparative analyses, across countries or relative to other beverages, are especially encouraged, along with lessons from the past for industry and policy.

Why February 6?

  • Late summer, vintage is about to happen in the 3 wine regions within one hour’s drive from Adelaide’s CBD.
  • The Annual Conference of AARES begins in the same venue on the evening of 6 February through to Friday, 9 February.
  • Two new books will be launched at the end of the workshop: Wine Globalization: A New Comparative History (edited by K. Anderson and V. Pinilla), Cambridge University Press, and K. Anderson, S. Nelgen and V. Pinilla, Global Wine Markets, 1860 to 2016: A Statistical Compendium, University of Adelaide Press.

Deadline for paper proposals: Please send a one-page abstract or draft paper to kym.anderson@adelaide.edu.au by 4 August 2017. Selection decisions will be notified by 31 August 2017. Authors of papers not able to be included in the Workshop program are encouraged to submit their abstract to the Contributed Papers section of the AARES Conference that immediately follows the Workshop – see www.aares.org.au
